Brightline Teams with Typoe for MiamiCentral Art Installation

MIAMI, Fla. – June 22, 2018 – Brightline, Florida’s new hospitality-focused express intercity passenger rail service, announced its collaboration with Typoe, who created a permanent art installation at MiamiCentral, the new 11-acre intermodal development in the heart of downtown Miami. An internationally known and Miami-based multidisciplinary artist, Typoe began the creation and installation of the artwork in early June. A special reception to celebrate his work will be held this evening at MiamiCentral.

Typoe’s movement-themed murals live on a main wall and two surrounding columns in the ticketed guest lobby at MiamiCentral. Utilizing bright, tropical colors to reflect the Brightline train and vibrant Miami community, he created dimension through the station’s existing element of concave walls with a colored grid that features engaging optical paintings to push, pull and skew visitors’ eyes. The colorful piece blends with the overall aesthetic of the station in creating an inviting and visually appealing space for future riders.

“I thought a lot about the different ways this piece could be approached with the theme of movement and the dimensions of the wall,” said Typoe. “While it could’ve been very literal, I wanted to create a fun and engaging piece reflective of the Miami community that would be an experiential interaction for visitors and make them even more excited about riding the Brightline train.”

Typoe’s installation is one of the first steps in blending culture and community into each of Brightline’s three South Florida stations.

“Miami is home to one of the world’s most incredible art scenes, and Typoe is one of its most recognizeable faces, “said Ravneet Bhandari, Brightline’s chief commercial officer. “Brightline goes beyond transportation and is excited to invest and play a part in the communities in which we operate. We are focused on our stations becoming cultural destinations, and this is one of the first monumental steps in that direction.”

Typoe’s work plays upon the constant tension between the dark recesses of the urban underground and the simmering bling of celebrity. He often works with different mediums like gunpowder, fire, plastic and spray paint to create stimulating pieces in response to a certain situation or environment that makes the audience think at a deeper level about the work that they are seeing. Typoe’s most recent project was a cool sculpture installation in Los Angeles spelling out a favorite music lyric out of vibrant block letters in hopes of bringing viewers to a childlike state where there were no limits on dreams or potential. Typoe draws inspiration for his artwork from the surrounding area, such as a mural he created last summer in New York City inspired by the flower district.

Typoe has participated in gallery and museum shows around the world and exhibited his work in Mexico City, Mexico, New York, New York, Los Angeles, California, Bueno Aires, Argentina and Basel, Switzerland. A Miami native, Typoe began to gain recognition during Wynwood’s development into the city’s first outdoor museum of street art. A graduate of the Hyde School in Maine, Typoe began his career as a graffiti artist before progressing to sculpture and gallery work.

Typoe has designed a line of shores for Del Toro, toured with Skrillex as his art director, designed a collection of jackets and created an installation inside the Faena Bazaar. In addition to his art installation at MiamiCentral, Typoe looks forward to debuting a furniture company in Little Haiti, where he now lives, and continuing to grow Primary Flight, Miami’s original open air museum and street level mural installation that he co-founded in 2007.

With 11 northbound and 11 southbound trips per day running between Miami, Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach, Brightline guests will have the opportunity to see Typoe’s work in the MiamiCentral station. Guests can purchase tickets at any of the three Brightline stations, on the Brightline app and www.gobrightline.com.
